Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has announced Shs 21.5 trillion as revenue collected in the just concluded Financial Year, 2021/22.
URA Commissioner General, John Musinguzi, told the media yesterday that the tax body collected Shs 21.5 trillion in Financial Year 2021/2022. This is in comparison to Shs 19 trillion collected in the FY 2020/2021.
According to Musinguzi, Domestic Taxes contributed Shs 13.6 trillion while Customs managed above Shs 8 trillion.
He attributed the collection to tax education, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), enforcement operations, widening of the tax register and improvement of arrears management among others.
URA’s target in the last financial year was Shs 22.63 trillion.
The shortfall was Shs 704 billion. Musinguzi however explained that out of the 704 billion, the taxman demands government Shs 400 billion, meaning that shortfall is nearly 300 billion.
URA’s 2022/2023 target has been set by the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, at Shs 25.15 trillion, an increase of Shs 3.5 trillion from last year’s target.
Musinguzi says that the target is achievable.
