Deaf youths have called on the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to develop and produce tax information material designed specifically for them. This call came during an engagement between URA and Makerere University Association for the Deaf Students (MUKADS) mid this week.
The theme for the engagement was ‘An inclusive tax regime for persons with hearing impairment – Deaf.’ The deaf students explained that it is so hard for them to understand tax information which is posted online when they do not hear anything.
URA Tax Education expert, Andrew Kyakonye noted that the tax body needs to understand tax needs for the Deaf in order to better serve them form and a relationship that will create voluntary compliance.
Kyakonye further explained that URA is engaging the youths, who are majorly involved in Small and Medium Enterprises (SME’s), because they make up the biggest percentage of Uganda’s population. The engagement followed the International Deaf Awareness Week 2022.
The engagement came up with action points that would help better inform URA on matters concerning taxation of the Deaf community namely ; Developing and producing tax information for the deaf and reviewing URA’s structure to cater for Persons with Disability (PWDs).
