Gulu City Forced to procure another contractor for stalled UGX 4 Billion land field

By Tolit Ivan

Gulu City Council is in a dilemma and have decided to  procure  for another contractor to complete the construction of the stalled multi-billion  land field  that was abandoned by Geo Max Construction company limited in 2021.

MS Acek Uganda Limited has been hired for a period of six month to complete the construction of the stalled Land Field at a tune of UXG 4 billion with funding from KFW, a Germany Bank.

In June, 2021 Gulu City hired the services of Geomax Engineering Company Limited to undertake the construction of the land field in Pageya Ward, Laroo-Pece division in Gulu City for a period of six months to improve on the garbage management at an initial cost of UGX 3.05 billion.

Three months into the project, the company abandoned the site after covering only  30% of the work

In an interview with  The Second Opinion, Isaiah Tumwesigye, the outgoing Gulu City Town Clerk said they were forced to hire MS Acek Uganda Limited after Geo Mac Engineering Construction Company limited wrote to them in December last year that they were incapacitated to complete the work and requested them to be paid their money for the 30% of the work  done.

According to Tumwesigye, the contract has been cleared by the Solicitor general and only waiting to sign it  after getting approval from the KFW, a Germany bank  that is supporting the project.

He added that stalling of the project has greatly affected garbage management within the city.

The land field will be able to handle 188,079,000 cubic meters of waste on a daily basis.
