The Foundation for Human Rights Initiative [FHRI] has challenged the government to appreciate the great role played by civil society organizations working in the human rights sector for the good of all stakeholders who consume these services.
The call was made over the weekend by the executive director of the organization Dr.Livingstone Sewanyana while presenting his special report to members that turned up for their 25th annual general meeting which was held at their Nsambya based Human Rights House headquarters attended by over 300 delegates.
In his opening rejoinder he pointed out that FHRI shall continue with its mandate of pushing for the human rights frontiers for a fairer and just society amidst the human rights situation painfully remaining grim.
He decried the rising levels of poverty, youth unemployment, high fuel and commodity prices, an ever growing debt burden, crime, corruption and a disillusioned civil society that characterize everyday reality.
Sewanyana attributed their achievements registered so far would not be possible without the support of their board of directors ,staff, partners, peers, membership and relevant stakeholders.
He slammed the government for reportedly clandestinely failing to renew the operating license for the Citizen coalition for electoral democracy in Uganda [CCEDU] which body was instrumental in spreading the sensitization gospel of electoral democracy which greatly empowered citizens to make informed political and electoral decisions which suits their interests as citizens.

We strongly as FHRI condemn the government’s clandestine decision of failing to renew the operating license of CCEDU yet it had been effective in sensitizing and building capacity of citizens to understand their democratic civic rights on electoral processes, allowing them to make informed political and electoral governance decisions among other civil rights.
The FHRI board chiefs collectively congratulated the members for the support saying the research and advocacy unit ha effectively promoted human rights monitoring ,research, documentation and reporting of human rights violations of which has in return helped to hold government to account for such abuses
The secretary National NGO Bureau Steven Okello who was guest speaker of the day commended FHRI for positively steering the National human rights agenda from the civil society sector saying the bureau shall continue working with FHRI In ensuring that they jointly find solutions to the shrinking civil society spaces.
