The Government of Japan has donated 1,159 metric tons of miled rice worth 2.2 million USD to help in addressing food crisis in over 40,000 refugee settlement camps across the country.

The Deputy Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, Norimasa Yoshida said the humanitarian assistance (food aid) will help World Food Program to boost it’s food rations which the agency had suspended in May this year hence affecting 1 million refugees living in various refugee centers across the country.

He added that the donation follows an influx of refugees arriving at various refugee resettlement camps yet  those reception centers lack adequate food to feed the growing number of refugees.

“The donation reflects Japan’s responsibility in responding to humanitarian assistance. Japan is proud to stand with Uganda to provide those in need. The food rations will greatly help to address humanitarian challenges, ” Ambassador Norimasa Yoshida reiterated

He further revealed that the cordial relationship between the government of Uganda and it’s counterpart of Japan is not limited to humanitarian assistance emphasizing it’s built on trust, mutual respect and a shared vision of peace and development.

The Country Director World Food Program in Uganda , Lauren Landis, appreciated the government of Japan for it’s timely contribution revealing that food relief will be delivered to reception and transit centers where refugees arrive immediately after crossing the border.

” Japan’s contribution will provide critical relief to those in need. We have a strong partnership between the government of Japan and Uganda. The Government of Japan will continue to fund those in need .

The Undersecretary for refugees in the office of the prime minister, Jane Nantale said the donation symbolizes good bilateral ties between the government of Uganda and Japan. She, however revealed that in 2025 alone , Uganda welcomed approximately 145,000 new refugees from conflict prone countries of Sudan, South Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo.

“The contribution strengthens the bridge of friendship between the two countries. The donated rice will be distributed to over 40,000 refugees living refugee camps across the country, ” said Nantale.
