Kalangala Woman MP By-Election Attracts Three Candidates as Late Legislator’s Sister Gets Nominated

The Kalangala District Woman MP seat by-elections has so far attracted three candidates who were successfully nominated on the first day of nominations. Among those nominated on the first day include; NUP’s Irene Nampala, a sister to the late area Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli, NRM’s Aidah Nabayiga and independent candidate Hellen Flavia Nagawa.

Speaking to the press after nominating the three candidates on Wednesday June 10,2026, the Kalangala District Electoral returning officer, Harriet Kashagire, noted that only three out of the six aspirants vying for the post turned up on day one of the nomination exercise. She, however said they’re still waiting for day two to see if other candidates will appear for nominations.

“We’ve got six people who expressed interest and picked nomination forms, but so far, we’ve received three, who have been duly nominated. We shall keep here waiting for those other three or any other person who may pick interest to come and be nominated” said Kashagire.

She challenged nominated candidates and their supporters to follow the electoral laws and guidelines in place to deter instances of electoral violence.

“Usually conflicts or scuffles start when you stop following the law, that is when either the candidate or someone else diverts and start doing things that are not within the law. Therefore, we expect everyone to take part but follow the law. If it’s campaign everyone knows these campaigns are supposed to start at 8am and stop at 6pm. Don’t go beyond this time” Kashagire cautioned nominated candidates.

She further further revealed that Kalangala districts has 42,452 registered voters from 115 polling stations. On this note, she assured Kalangala voters to conduct a transparent electoral process, urging stakeholders to maintain peace.

Upon being nominated, NUP’s Nampala pledged to prioritize the concerns of fishermen, women’s empowerment, and upgrading the district’s healthcare and education services, if elected.

Independent candidate Hellen Flavia Nagawa pledged to lobby for a district hospital to fix healthcare gaps, improve the island’s poor road network, and voice community grievances.

The Director for mobilisation at the NRM secretariat, Rosemary Sseninde, appealed to Kalangala residents to vote NRM’s Aidah Nabayigga, promising that she will champion community development.

Meanwhile, the By-election which is scheduled to take place on June 24,2026, comes just two months following the death of the late area MP Hellen Nakimuli, who passed away in April after unsuccessful surgery.
