No Charges Preferred Against Makerere Student Bosses

By Francis Otucu

The police have not preferred any charges against Makerere University student leaders arrested last evening for allegedly inciting violence.

Among those arrested is Guild Speaker Isaac Ssenteza Kwagala and, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango said the students had ‘just been isolated’.

Ssenteza Kwagala was reportedly arrested at Pool Road for allegedly convening an emergency students’ General Assembly ‘to discuss the way forward’ as a strike by Makerere staff (MUASA) members continues over the sacking of their Chairman Deus Kamunyu.

“There is no arrest made at Makerere University. We only isolated leaders,” Onyango said.

Probed to explain what ‘isolation’ means, he said the term is used in cases where police carries out preventive arrests.

“There are no charges preferred against them. So, we just isolated them from interacting with other students. We realized that they were inciting other students into striking yet lectures are supposed to be going on,” he said.

Ssenteza is currently being detained at the Central Police Station in Kampala as the police wait for calm to return to Makerere University.
