Rwanda Foreign Minister to Rwandans: Keep off Uganda

By Francis Otucu

Rwandan Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Richard Sezibera has asked his country’s nationals to keep out of Uganda.

In a tweet sent out last night, Dr. Sezibera said Rwanda’s borders are open. He explained that heavy trucks and other heavy vehicles are advised to use Kagitumba given what he said on-going works at Gatuna.

Sezibera, a former East African Community (EAC) Secretary General, however, advised Rwandans against traveling to Uganda.

“Rwandans are advised NOT to travel to Uganda due to ongoing arrests, harassment, torture …” he wrote on his official twitter account, @rsezibera.

He added: “Incarceration without consular access, deportation etc. This is for their own security. Ugandans in Rwanda or traveling through Rwanda are safe.”

Sezibera’s tweet came hours after Ugandan government had reportedly summoned his country’s diplomat to explain the blockage on Uganda-Rwanda border.

On Thursday, it emerged that Ugandan border at Katuna had been blocked. An alternative route was provided with an explanation that road works were going on at Katuna.
