US warns its citizens in Uganda: Avoid crowds, stay alert, be aware of surroundings

By Francis Otucu

In an alert sent out Thursday, the US government through its embassy in Uganda said there are possible attacks in places frequented by Americans.

“There are rumors of impending attacks in areas frequented by expats within East Africa, including Uganda.  The Embassy has no substantiating evidence of the threat or information on the timing,” the message reads in part, warning, “but nonetheless warns citizens to take the precautions outlined below. Actions to Take: Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid crowds. Monitor media for updates. Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists/Westerners.”

Similar alerts have also been sent out in neighboring Tanzania and Kenya.

But the alert in Uganda comes barely a month when Internal Security Organization issued warning and published photographs said to be plotters of the attacks in the country.

The police said Thursday they are on standby.
