Tuesday night, social media declared central bank governor, Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile dead.
However, veteran journalist, Andrew Mwenda clarified the matter, describing it false.
“I have spoken to Dr Ben Mbonye who has confirmed to me that Bank of Uganda governor, Tumusiime-Mutebile, is recovering rapidly and is now able to sit and talk! He will be discharged in a day or two! Rumors on social media about his health are false!” Mwenda tweeted at 10:28pm.
Wednesday morning, the central bank spoke out.
The bank revealed that Mutebile took leave on March 25, 2020 and is currently receiving treatment.
“On Wed Mar 25, 2020 Prof. Mutebile Bank of Uganda Governor took sick leave. He is receiving treatment in a Ugandan medical facility and will resume duty as soon as he has recuperated. Strongly disregard the false and malicious stories of his passing,” Dr. Adam Mugume, the Executive Director Research at BoU tweeted.
Another tweet came in from Charity Mugumya, the Director Communications, Bank of Uganda.
“Governor was unwell. His doctors attended to him and he is currently recovering very well,” she tweeted.
This is not the first time social media is announcing prominent persons, dead.
Most recent one was that of Joseph Tamale Mirundi, a media consutant and an adviser to President Yoweri Museveni.
