Young people have been encouraged to seek opportunities, embrace government initiatives aimed at improving household income, and actively participate in project planning to overcome poverty.
This call was made by Nambuya Mariam, the Mbale City Female Youth councilor during a youth engagement meeting on Monday morning at Mountain Inn Hotel as part of the International Youth Day celebrations. The national celebrations were held in Soroti city on Monday 12th August 2024 with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the chief guest.

Nambuya, who also serves as the Mbale City Speaker, highlighted that Uganda’s young population faces numerous challenges, including unemployment, mindset issues, and limited access to financial opportunities, which continue to keep many youths below the poverty line.
Emma Bwayo, the Namisindwa Male Youth Councilor, urged young people to clearly define their role in politics. Bwayo, who is also a member of the European Union Youth Sounding Board, encouraged youths to pursue elective positions to amplify their voices.

He emphasized that the role of young people in politics should extend beyond merely putting up posters, supporting senior politicians, and engaging in verbal conflicts. Bwayo also stressed the importance of ensuring that the 30% allocation under the Parish Development Model is upheld to enhance the incomes of young people.
