The annual crime report released Monday has showed that sex related offences emerged among the top crimes in 2018. These include in category of rape and defilement. In 2018, 15, 366 cases of defilement were reported before police. This is an increase of 2.5% in comparison to 14, 985 cases reported in 2017. Of these, 8, 217 cases were reported in rural areas, 7,107 in urban areas and 42 on the highway. 1, 501 were arrested in the process. 1, 535 taken to court and 795 convicted.
RAPE
1, 580 cases were recorded in 2018 compared to 1, 335 in 2017. Of these, 811 cases were recorded in rural areas, 730 in urban areas and 38 on the highway. The police spent Shs2, 680,000 investigating the cases. As result, 386 suspects were arrested, 423 taken to court and 185 convicted.
Speaking at the release of the report, the Inspector General of Police Martins Okoth Ochola urged the public to keep up the spirit of joining hands with the Police in the fight against crime to ensure a crime free society.
