In an intervention to improving on livelihoods, health, safety and access to essential infrastructure and responding to identified community needs, the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Ltd. Has commissioned new and refurbished sanitation facilities at Kabagarame Market in Sembabule District.
Located near EACOP’s Main Camp and Pipe Yard 3 (MCPY 3), the facilities are expected to serve more than 500 market dwellers from 16 surrounding villages, including Kabayola, Kyemandwa A and B, Kagango, Kabusa, Kidokilo, Nambirizi, Muyenje, Kyololo, Nsambya, Njaza, Mitti, Mabaale, Kasekera, Kyatulo and Kisindi.
While officiating the commissioning ceremony, EACOP Deputy Managing Director John Bosco Habumugisha said access to clean water and sanitation is critical to improving the health and productivity of communities. “Access to clean and safe water remains a significant challenge in Uganda. By providing this vital resource, we have taken a commendable step towards empowering the people of Kabagarame Market and enabling them to lead healthier and more productive lives,” Habumugisha said.
The commissioned infrastructure includes a 10-stance drainable pit latrine block serving both male and female users. The facility has been designed with adequate ventilation, lighting and privacy, while the site also features a rainwater harvesting tank and a landscaped environment. The intervention is part of EACOP’s Community Health and Safety initiatives and aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which focuses on clean water and sanitation.
Through its community investment programmes, EACOP implements initiatives under five key pillars: Future Generations, Environment, Community Health and Safety, Water Solutions, and Sustainable Energy.
In Sembabule District, the company has also provided 14 water-harvesting facilities to communities in Buzirandulu, Kiteredde and Njaza, aimed at improving access to water and strengthening community resilience. The Kabagarame Market project forms part of EACOP’s wider community investment programme, which seeks to deliver community-centred development initiatives across its project footprint.
EACOP said it remains committed to working with local communities and stakeholders to implement sustainable initiatives that contribute to long-term social and economic development.
