The UN independent Expert on an Equitable and Democratic Society, who is also the Executive Director Foundation for Human Rights Initiative, Dr. Livingstone Sewanyana is in Doha, Qatar at the Ritz Carlton Hotel to attend a high-level conference on National, regional and International mechanisms to combat impunity and ensure accountability under international law.

The two-day meeting convened by the National Human Rights Committee of Qatar, the European Parliament and the International Office of the High Commissioner for Human rights (OHCHR) is dealing with the question of ending impunity and developing accountability under international Law.

The conference has reiterated the need for new effective measures to deal with the current practices of states engaging in abuses and holding leaders accountable for their actions. Dr Sewanyana gave proposals on how to reinforce the international mechanisms such as the international criminal court, the Security Council, the office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The conference brings together over 300 experts, representatives of Government and organizations from the entire world.

Key among the issues under consideration at the conference is the issue of the right to know, access to justice and provision of guarantees for non-recurrence of human rights violations.

Also key among the issues of discussion is the mechanisms for the provision of justice, including the African Court on Human rights. Such mechanisms ensure justice is attained and victims get redress.

The conference will also consider coming up with an integrated system of laws and mechanisms for the prevention, control and promotion of accountability in the field of human rights and International Human law.
