Cabinet has on Monday approved recommendations and strategies proposed by the Ministry of Public Service to manage traditional and teaching service pensioners and claimants.
Sitting yesterday at the State House, Entebbe, Cabinet approved deactivation from the pension payroll and stoppage of payments to un-validated pensioners and validated pensioners whose biometrics are not matching with NIRA’s data. This, sources say will be done by June 1, 2019.
Insiders say Cabinet also agreed to institute an investigation of Inspectorate of Government of records that will be deactivated from the payroll by June 1, 2019. Sources privy to the meeting say there is a move to finalize updating of pension database with validated and matching records by May 31, 2019.
In 2016, Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee learnt that a total of Shs23bn had been paid to ghost pensioners by the ministry.
The Second Opinion understands that against the above background and to tame payments to ‘ghosts’, Public Service Ministry tabled before cabinet a proposal to manage traditional and teaching service pensioners and claimants.
