GM Sugar Factory Boss’ Death in New Twist, Father Demands for Justice

As workers at GM Sugar factory in Buikwe district are protesting against the mysterious death of their
coworker Samuel Kasumba, parents of the deceased have raised their concern that the company authorities
took the body to the mortuary before police arrived at the scene.

Kasumba 24, a resident of Konko A’ Wakisi division in Njeru Municipality was working as a supervisor
in the boiler department where he met his final day.

According to the father of the deceased Mr. Kasumba Henry Kiyimba, he’s not satisfied with the manner
in which the factory authorities managed to carry the body from the scene to Jinja Referral hospital
mortuary before informing neither the family nor police.

“Am not convinced with the company authorities, how could you lose someone and you carry their body
to the mortuary without informing the concerned parties? Mzei Kiyimna asked”

He added that even at a time of his son’s death, it was heavily raining and his Indian boss had forced him
to go and clean the old boiler machine yet the cleaners were available to do that.

“I just need to know why the Indian forced my son to go and clean the machines, a roll that wasn’t his
over during a heavy downpour”, Mr. Kiyimba told the mourners on Thursday.

According to the statement at Njeru Police station, the deceased went to clean the old boiler while it was still
raining at around 4:00pm in the morning resulting in his immediate death.

Superintendent of Police Helen Butoto who’s the spokesperson for Ssezibwa region confirmed the
incident and said police handed over the body to the hospital.

In the same vein, workers who didn’t want to be quoted told us that they are on a sit down strike
demanding the factory authorities to provide them with enough and efficient working protective gears.

“Unfortunately, when you demand for protective gears, you’re instantly dismissed and no labor
organisation can help us through this pain”, he said with anonymity.

In five months, Kasumba became the second person to die from this factory following the last year on
19 th November where a worker died and the body was still sneaked out to the mortuary.

Efforts to reach out to the Company Director Milan Vithabhaldobaria went futile after he failed to pick up
our calls.
