Huawei Seeds for the Future 2020 timely – Ambassador Mayega

Uganda’s Head of Mission in Beijing, China, Henry Mayega, has described as timely, Huawei’s 2020 Seeds for the future program.

Speaking as chief guest at the opening ceremony held via zoom Monday morning, Mayega, commended Huawei for being a vehicle for technology transfer.  

“This is in handy, that even when people cannot meet physically, technology can be employed,” Mayega said, referring to the meeting that paved way for a one week training for top 37 ICT students from 8 public universities in Uganda. He added: “Huawei has been at the centre of coordinating meetings between students in China and the embassy. The future belongs to the interlink through technology. Huawei’s contribution will forever be documented in Uganda’s history.”

According to Mayega, Huawe’s roles in spearheading technology transfer from China to Uganda is a sign that diplomatic relations between China and Uganda is on an upward trend. “We must thank Huawei,” Mayega said, looking at Huawei PR Director, Gao Jian.

Earlier, Prof. Tony Oyana, the Principal of the College of Computing and Information at Makerere University advised learners to take the opportunity as a service to the nation, value honesty and integrity (soft skills) as well as carry good values and work ethics. Prof. Oyana appealed to Huawei to consider involving top three private universities for Seeds for the future participation in future. “I request that we expand the program to hunt for more women,” he said.  He commended Huawei for spearheading service learning (bridging the gap between the industry and the academia) which he said is very important. “We thank Huawei for the talent hunt. Seeds for the future is a talent hunt,” Prof. Oyana said.

According to Gao, the training that will last one week shall be an online training where students are required to stay at home but study.

“During this one week’s program from 7th to 11th September, the students shall be trained and nurtured in the latest technological trends such as 5g and cloud computing among so many others. We hope that the students utilize this chance to learn for free so that they can translate from seeds to tress and forests that shall be of great importance to Uganda and its ICT Sector. We shall provide them with all the necessary logistics such as data, airtime to keep online,” he said

The seeds for the future program is Huawei’s Corporate Social Responsibility flag ship program that began in 2008. This program takes 10 students every year to China for hands- on technological training in the latest industry trends. Approximately 30,000 students have taken part since inception. Gao added that the company globally introduced this online study to promote continuity of the program without any boundaries and limitations created by COVID-19.
