KABALE: Rwandan Police shoot national carrying potatoes into Rwanda

By Francis Otucu

Ugandan Police are investigating circumstances under which a Rwandan national was shot Monday while carrying 50 kilograms of irish potatoes into Rwanda from Kabale.

Well-placed sources say the incident happened at 7:30pm at Rushaki B Cell, Karujanga Parish, Rubaya sub-county Ndorwa West in Kabale district when Jean Piere Havugimana, 29, a resident of Kabaya Village, Gishara Umudugudu Parish, Rubaya sub-county, Gicumbi district in Rwanda was crossing into Rwanda when Rwandan Police allegedly  shot and wounded him in the process.

Police sources say they are now probing circumstances under which he was shot, and the motive of the shooting, as it is not very clear whether the victim was shot on Uganda or Rwanda side.

“We are to get the facts of the incident as we visit the scene,” a source said.

Havugimana’s relatives on Ugandan side are said to have taken him to Katuna Community Medical Clinic at Katuna border where he is currently undergoing treatment.
