Malaba Border: URA Enforcement Team Impounds Used Computers en route to Mbale

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Enforcement Team at Malaba has recovered a consignment of used computers following an intelligence-led operation targeting the illegal importation of second-hand electronics through panya routes. Uganda strictly regulates the import of such items in a bid to curb e-waste.

According to URA Assistant Commissioner Public and Corporate Affairs Robert Kalumba, intelligence indicated that a suspect had stockpiled used computers on the Kenyan side of Malaba and was planning to transport them to Mbale through unauthorized border routes.

Acting on the tip-off, the enforcement team mounted surveillance along the Malaba–Koitangiro Road and intercepted two vehicles that had entered Uganda through the Nile B panya route.

”The recovered items included monitors, CPUs and adapters, and both the vehicles and goods were seized in line with the law,” said Kalumba.

Meanwhile, URA Commissioner General John Musinguzi has urged taxpayers to take advantage of the ongoing tax waiver program rather than engage in smuggling and other illegal practices. Under the waiver, URA is clearing 100% of accrued interest and penalties for taxpayers who pay all outstanding principal domestic taxes due as of June 30, 2024, by June 30, 2026.
