Reports emerging from the political camp of defeated state minister for older persons affairs Dominic Gidudu Mafabi after losing the two slots of Member of Parliament for older person’s Eastern region as well as CEC national vice chairperson for older person league indicate that he reportedly cried like a baby shortly after the results were declared.
The former director of the media centre [UMC] Ofwono Opondo was declared winner by the NRM election boss Dr.Tanga Odoi at Kololo independence grounds recently having garnered 168 votes against 122 to secure the flag ready to compete in the main elections.
Opondo said the minister, having been preoccupied with so many things, forgot to serve his constituents yet he had several projects and programs lined up for older persons who chose to reward him in kind by showing him the political exit door.
He noted that he was determined to bring favorable legislation in the 12th parliament that works in the interest of the elderly persons who must be treated with dignity given that they are senior citizens who built the current development blocks on which we all thrive on today as a country.
He congratulated the electorate for entrusting him with their mandate saying he will engage all stakeholders to see that elder’s constitutional rights and obligations are fully catered for through enactment of good policies such as an increase in their social assistance grant for empowerment [SAGE] take home monthly pay.
Opondo observed that Gidudu reportedly failed to address the challenges faced by the older community despite serving in three different office categories namely state minister for elderly affairs, MP Elderly Eastern region and CEC member eastern region respectively.
One of the voters at Kololo told us that Gidudu failed to manage his own home , all the time he was involved in scandals with his family and other women forgetting to carry out duties of the older persons.
Rebecca Nadunga his wife of two children has been in running battles with Gidudu to help the family , get accommodation for his little school going children matters that she took to his senior minister for gender and social Development Betty Amongi and even before the prime minister Robina Nabanja who summoned Gidudu but the poor woman failed to get justice and as we write now she still languishing with children in rented rooms where she faces eviction order time to time.
The older voter also revealed that soon they will produce more scandals about minister Gidudu which led to his rejection as NRM voters.
Gidudu simultaneously lost two offices including the parliamentary flag slot which he is the incumbent as well as aspiring to become the national vice chairperson elderly’s league of which he lost to Penninah Busingye, the current MP elderly representing the Central region.
The Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE) program in Uganda is a government initiative, supported by development partners, to provide cash transfers to vulnerable households, particularly older persons, to reduce chronic poverty and improve access to essential services.
Initially a pilot, the SAGE program evolved into a national rollout, focusing on the Senior Citizens Grant (SCG) for the elderly and the Vulnerable Family Support Grant (VFSG) to address widespread poverty and its social impacts.
The program is managed by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (MGLSD) and aims to support beneficiaries with funds for food, health, education, and productive investments.
