KATAKWI – 720 cassava stems worth 20milion were supplied to the 26 schools in Ngariam county in Katakwi district to enable pupils have a midday bite next year.
The supplies were made by Daniel Mulalu the private secretary in the office of the president in charge of political mobilization who said this first yielding naracass variety meant to address the problems of starving in schools which has resulted into high school dropout rates and escaping poor performance in primary leaving examinations.
Mulalu said the move is aimed at improving the level of Education in Katakwi District and fulfilling Government’s policy of having all children get meals at School.
This will also help to rejuvenate the old culture of schools gardens where learners used to get skills on farming.
At the close May 2022, Mulalu gave 300 bags of cassava cutting to 15 primary schools out of the 26 schools in Ngariam County. He later brought the second phase 420 bags which were distributed to 11 remaining schools.
The cassava cuttings are being procured from renowned farmer in Uganda Mzee Augustine Akuku of Asamuk sub county in Amuria district at cost of shs25,000 each bag.
Peter Okello, a P3 pupil at Ocorimongin primary school who was at the school premises at the time of delivering the cassava stems said that he appreciated Mulalu because the cassava will help them to feed in future.
Jennifer Rose Amuge the head teacher of Ocwin PS said the school has enough land and will use the stems to multiply foryear after year. .
Joseph Erieu the head teacher of Lalei primary school said he was worried about the cost of ploughing but got relieved after Mulalu gave each school shs.70,000/= as each acre is ploughed at shs.35,000
Joseph Oseluo, a parent at Ocwin PS said they will be relieved for next year because even currently he was not able to buy maize for porridge that pupils feed on at school.
Mulalu also promised to deliver potato veins next month in order to improve the Education standards of Katakwi schools.
