Museveni urges Kigezi region to stop land fragmentation

By George Mangula

President Yoweri Museveni has advised the people of Kigezi region to abandon the practice of land fragmentation, which he said is not viable for commercial agriculture.

“I appeal to the people of Kigezi region to abandon the practice of land fragmentation because this disables land as the small units cannot be used for farming that is commercially viable.

Museveni made the call yesterday while in Murora Subcounty, Bufumbira East Constituency, Kisoro District. Museveni said the people of Murora Subcounty voted overwhelmingly for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) with the highest percentage of votes in Kigezi region, in the last election cycle.

“With this mandate, the NRM has been able to carry out infrastructure developments in the area for example tarmacking the Kabale-Kisoro road, electricity, schools and now piped water, restored peace and unity in the region,” he said.

Museveni thanked the area residents for turning up in big numbers to listen to him. “I thank you for turning up in big numbers,” he said.

The infrastructure developments, he said, have laid a good foundation for development. “Therefore the people of Murora and Kigezi region in general ought to maximally take advantage of this environment to develop, by improving their household incomes through commercialising agriculture, small scale industries.”

The President said government would work on the roads that lead to the major tourist attractions so as to boost the local economy in the region.
