Nairobi Attack: Police Counter Terrorism Director Speaks Out

Hours later, Police’s Director in Charge Counter Terrorism, AIGP Abas Byakagaba has spoken out following a terror attack on DusitD2 Hotel in Nairobi yesterday. In a statement sent out last night, a copy of which seen by this Reporter, Byakagaba said: “Following the suspected terror attacks in Nairobi on Tuesday afternoon (15.01.2019), all Unit Commanders are hereby instructed to be on high alert and ensure precautionary measures to close security gaps in AOR and work closely with other security agencies, the private security. Ensure maximum vigilance and activate all measures to protect all vulnerable areas including crowded places, hotels, tourist sites and other facilities…,” part of the message reads. 14 people were yesterday confirmed dead following the attack in which al-shabab militants claimed responsibility. Byakagaba’s statement however comes at a time there are concerns a repeat of the July 10, 2010 bombing on Kyadondo Rugby Grounds in Kampala. At least 74 people were killed and other injured in the twin-bombings on fans watching the 2010 World Cup finals.
