By Francis Otucu

One person has been confirmed dead after a stray bullet hit him during an operation of security agencies against serial murderers.

Calvin Mutegesi, 29, was pronounced dead on arrival at Nakasongola Miltary Hospital Friday.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga confirmed the incident.

“We are investigating the incident,” Enanga said adding, “We have reached out to the family of the deceased. We regret the death of Mutegesi.”

Mutegesi was shot in an operation against serial murderers in the area.

This, after four people were killed in barely a space of 24 hours by unknown people at  Wabigalo Village, Wabigalo Parish, and Wabinyonyi Sub-County in Nakasongora District.

The victims include two male juveniles, one female adult and an elderly man, whose heads were all chopped off, during the grisly murders.

They are;

  1. Meshach Mawanda, 10. Incident happened December 5, 2019 at 2pm.
  2. Sekanza Amos, 7.  Incident happened December 5, 2019 at 2:30pm at Kyalubambula Village, Kyankonwa Parish, Kakooge, Sub-County.
  3. At round 3.02 pm, Judith Adur, 30 was hacked dead at Wabigalo.
  4. Again, at around 3.15pm, 93-year-old Rosio Matovu was hacked dead at Wabigalo.

Explaining the killings, investigators said, the terrifying chain of events began, on December 2, 2019 when, at around 2pm, after, the yet to be identified assailant, attacked Mawanda, a 10 year old at Wabigalo and chopped of his head.He was attacked while following his mother to a nearby charcoal burning site. At around 2.50pm while at the scene, the police received information about a second incident of murder by hacking, of Sekanza, 7. This incident happened at Kyalubambula.  The victim who was in the company of his mother was grabbed by the attacker, who chopped off his head with a panga. The terrified mother fled during the attack.  She eventually described the attacker as a “male adult in mid-twenties, dark skinned, medium size and height, with a haircut, and was putting on a sleeveless t-shirt with a design in the centre and a black trouser.”

3.02 pm, Adur, 30 was hacked dead at Wabigalo. She was attacked from the back, while carrying firewood, heading to Wabigalo Trading Centre, and her head chopped off while Matovu, 93 was attacked in a similar manner later that same day.

“The hunt for the suspect has now entered day two and still ongoing.  At this stage, the motive of the random act is not yet established. And we would like to caution the public within Wabigalo and Kyankonwa parish, that the panga-wielding suspect, has not been identified yet and is considered dangerous.  We believe he should still be hiding within the area. We do further appeal to anyone with knowledge about the tragic incident, to share it with us in confidence on telephone numbers; 0712667712 (RPC), 0714667835 (DPC); and 0714667836 (D/CID),” Enanga said, condemning the incident. “We do strongly condemn the brutal and senseless act of killing innocent citizens. “

Bodies of the deceased have been transferred to Nakasongola Health Centre IV, for further post-mortem and burial arrangements.

“Our hearts go out to all families impacted by the senseless act,” Enanga said.
