Opinion: My ‘Love Letter’ to Uganda Airlines

Ugandan army veterans continue to face significant poverty challenges, stemming from unfulfilled government promises, theft or delay of their gratuity, and inadequate support systems. Many veterans struggle with financial hardship, lack of access to healthcare, and limited opportunities for economic reintegration after leaving the military. This situation not only affects veterans themselves but also perpetuates a cycle of poverty for their families.
Yet, one man has been constant in advocating for their welfare.
Maj. Gen. (RTD) Jim Muhwezi has been their representative in the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) for the past 15 years. However, Gen. Jim appears to be bettering his own welfare, as a number of veterans languish in abject poverty.
Now, a youthful contender is here. Lt. (RTD) Moses Mushabe has announced a bid for the National Chairperson, Veterans League. The position is currently held by Gen. Jim.
Mushabe, however, says that it is rather ironical for an elder to be in the position and yet not be able to advocate for the welfare of fellow veterans.
Well-placed sources say that Mushabe has full backing of senior veterans, and they are willing to end Gen. Jim’s reign by the end of this month at a meeting of delegates.
Mushabe is currently the NRM Chairman of Isingiro district, having won the seat with a 89% margin. He is also part of the Patriotic League o Uganda (PLU) leadership.
