NUP Speaks Out On Army Reshuffle: It’s about M7’s security, not Ugandans

By Nathan Ngobi

The National Unity platform (NUP) party has spoken out on the Thursday reshuffle in the army, saying the move is about strengthening President Yoweri Museveni’s security, not Ugandans.

According to the Thursday 24th June 2021 press release by the UPDF spokesperson Brig. Gen Flavia Byekwaso, President Museveni promoted Lt. Gen. Wilson Mbadi to full General and appointed him as the new Chief of Defense Forces (CDF), replacing Gen. David Muhoozi who was recently appointed junior minister for Internal Affairs. Gen. Mbadi served as Deputy CDF, a position Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu has been moved to, creating space at the Land Forces Command which by the Tuesday communication, was filled by Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

But speaking to the Second Opinion, Acting NUP party President, John Baptist Nambeshe said the current army leadership aims at ringfencing his personal security so that he tries to serve another term of office.

“Museveni wants personal security not the security of all Ugandans and that is why he made such changes  by bringing more loyal officers to guard and protect him for another what I can call  7th term of office not 6th,“ Nambeshie said.

He said that it is unconstitutional for president Museveni to continue promoting army officers and appoint them in active political position without first retiring them as the law requires.

He pointed out a few army officers who are occupying political spaces without having had to retire from the army.

They include Gen. Katumba Wamala and Gen David Muhoozi among others.

He said that a section of NUP members and lawyers are organizing to take legal redress over the matter.

Nambeshie added that the new reshuffle means a sure stay of president Museveni in power for another term but that NUP is not asleep.

“The struggles is still on,” he said.
