The Leader of Opposition and the Spokesperson for the leading opposition party has survived the electoral commission trash as the electoral commission upheld his eligibility as a candidate vying for the post of member of parliament for Nakawa West Constituency.

BWOWE THE PETITIONER

Joel Ssenyonyi was dragged to the electoral commission by fellow contender Ivan Bwowe together with seven others who included NRM’S Burora Herbert Anderson, Nasasira Happy, Okuye Felix Ephraim,Okumu Vincent Norbert, Kyambadde Wilberforce, and Rwamiti Apuli on grounds of alleged inconsistencies in the naming of the constituency and errors in their campaign programme submissions.

Bwowe’s petition had sought the electoral commission to declare him unopposed and nullify the nomination of all the eight contenders for Nakawa Division West was thrown in the bin, ruling that the

alleged naming inconsistencies did not affect the validity of their candidature in the 2026 general elections.

In the most recent decision communicated to the Petitioner and Respondents, the Commission said it found no merit in Bwowe’s complaint, which had been filed under Article 61(1)(f) of the Constitution and Section 15 of the Electoral Commission Act.

However, after reviewing the matter, the Commission observed that while some respondents referred to the constituency as “Nakawa West,” Bwowe himself had alternated between that name and the

legally recognized “Nakawa Division West.”

“In view of the foregoing, the Commission under MIN.COMP 042/2025, resolved that the complaint had no merit and the same stands dismissed. Accordingly, the Commission upholds the decision of the

Returning officer, Kampala in nominating the Respondents”, the letter read in parts.

However, Bwowe ran on his social media handles and informed his supporters to be calm and yet to inform them about his next step about the Commission’s decision after seeking legal advice from this legal team.

“The EC is venturing in non-legal considerations as basis to dismiss a legal matter which is ridiculous. I will however be meeting my legal team and we shall inform you about our next course of action with a number of legal remedies available to us”, Bwowe said.
