By Abraham Lincolns | Kalangala

Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving transport connectivity, healthcare services, electricity access and household income programs in Kalangala District as part of efforts to accelerate socio-economic transformation in the island communities.

Speaking in Kalangala, President KagutaMuseveni outlined plans to enhance water transport by increasing ferry schedules on the Nakiwogo-Bukakata route and introducing two additional ferries to improve movement of people, goods and services across the islands.

The proposed expansion will also support island-to-island connectivity, which is expected to ease transport challenges and boost trade, tourism and service delivery. Government also pledged to continue upgrading roads both on the mainland and within the islands to complement the improved ferry transport network.

On electricity, the President noted that Kalangala Town Council is already connected to the power grid, with plans underway to extend electricity to the remaining underserved areas to ensure wider access. In the health sector, government announced plans to construct a major hospital in the Ssese Islands to improve access to quality healthcare services, particularly for remote communities.

The President further highlighted the importance of peace and security in sustaining development and noted that government remains committed to maintaining stability across the district. On household incomes, government recognised oil palm growing as a major economic activity in Kalangala and pledged continued support to strengthen the sector, alongside tourism, which remains a key contributor to the district’s growth and development.
