Revenue Mobilization: URA confident of hitting Shs 25 trillion 2022/23 FY target

Uganda Revenue Authority – URA – is confident of collecting Shs 25.151 trillion by the end of the 2022/2023 Financial Year.

While releasing the half year revenue collection figures at the URA headquarters in Nakawa, the Authority’s Commissioner General, John Musinguzi Rujoki revealed that between July and December last year, the URA collected Shs 11. 67 trillion against a target of Shs 11. 764 trillion. Rujoki said the collection is a Shs 1.506 trillion growth compared to the same period last year. In this collection, Domestic Revenue brought in Shs 7.470 trillion while Customs managed Shs 4.453 trillion. Figures show that wholesale and retail sales contributed Shs 3.3 trillion while manufacturing and financial services garnered Shs 2.6 trillion and Shs 1.225 trillion respectively.

However, to meet the 2022/2023 target, URA will need to collect Shs 13.386 trillion (53% of the revenue target) between January and June 2023.

Asked about the possibility that the taxman will hit the target, Rujoki cleared his throat and said: “We are confident that we will achieve this target.”

Rujoki, however, said that it is a collective responsibility and that it requires “all hands on the deck.”

With tax education and sensitization, continued roll out of technology and use of data in revenue mobilization, skilling of staff, performance management and integrity enhancement, stakeholder collaboration and engagements and of course “God”, Rujoki says hitting the target will be possible.

He appealed to stakeholders to join hands mobilizing revenue and “building the nation together”
