Securing right of way: KCCA lauds residents for giving free land

Kampala City Capital Authority (KCCA) in an update on the status of road works in the city, has appreciated residents of Kulambiro, Kabuusu-Bunamwaya-Lweza, and Lukuli for allowing the project to construct the roads on their land at no cost. 

KCCA spokesperson Peter Kaujju says in return, KCCA will provide quality infrastructure, improved traffic flow, reduced floods and improved livelihood. “The overall progress on voluntary acquisition of land by signing Consent Agreements stands at 93.5%,” a statement of works as of March 2020 reads in part.

KCCA received a time extension of 18 months to complete roads and drainage channels by June 2021 under the Second Kampala Institutional & Infrastructure Project financed by the World Bank.

So far, the first set of roads and signalized junctions within Kampala including Bwaise junction, Mambule Road, Kiira Road, Kabira junction in Bukoto, Fairway Junction, Makerere Hill Road – from Wandegeya to Nakulabye, and Bakuli through Nakulabye to Kasubi Road were completed in 2018.  

On-going Road Construction

According to the latest update, the sKulambiro Ring Road, Najeera Link, Kabuusu-Bunamwaya-Lweza, Ntinda-Nakawa road, and Lukuli road are on-going where: Utilities have been relocated – water and electricity on all roads; installation of culverts for drainage is nearing completion; road excavation and widening has been done on most roads and ‘the reinstatement of perimeter walls affected by road works was done.’

What remains to be done

According to the KCCA update, several works remain to be done. They include: Filling up the excavated road with layers of marram and tarmac, Construction of walkways for pedestrians, Construction of signalized junctions, Marking of road lanes and installation of signage, Installation of street lights and landscaping

Dealing with drainage

The KCCA update on the road works also says the contract for reviewing the design of Lubigi   and Nakamiro drainage improvement works was approved. This, the update says, includes the supervision of construction works.

Further, the civil works contract for Lubigi and Nakamiro drainage improvement are awaiting clearance to enable construction to start.

“The consultant is working on a detailed design and Diagnostic Assessment of the Rehabilitation and Expansion of Nakivubo Channel,” the update says, adding that KCCA has issued a notice to property owners along Nakamiro Channel to demolish all paid properties.
