Speaker Anita Appeals to Politicians to Copy Rotarians Leadership tenure system

The speaker of the parliament of Uganda has appealed to Ugandan politicians to emulate the principle of Rotarians that provides for one term of office however good one may be. Speaker Anita Annet Among, said most Ugandan politicians don’t want to hand over power peacefully but instead hold onto power without minding what could happen to them in future. She made these comments in Kampala on June 22,  2024, during the Installation ceremony of the presidents of Rotary and Rotaract clubs of Kololo and Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi.

Speaker Anita Annet Among told Rotarians that much as she is not a Rotarian but as the speaker of Ugandan parliament, she will always stick to the truth and that’s the reason why she is being sanctioned because of being honest.

“For us politicians love staying in power for long. But the principle of Rotarians handing over power every year is the best way to go than overstaying in power. I will always say the truth and do what is right. Actually when you see me being sanctioned by many of these guys for telling the truth don’t be surprised.

“I repeat this God created Adam and Eve but not Adam and Adam. I’m not moved by any sanction and I feel at home. I feel good because I have done what is good, right and the truth and that’s Anita in me. And I get satisfaction when I do what is right.’

Speaker Among, who contributed Shs 100million towards the Rotary club of Kololo, pledged to support the new presidents and their rotary clubs revealing that  previously Parliament of Uganda donated Shs 2.7 billion and Shs 30m towards Nsambya rotary cancer program and Kinoni Health 1V respectively.

‘Much as I’m not a Rotarian I have done many things that make a rotarian. Rotary does things for humanity and looks at socio-economic issues like health, education and friendship-now I have made new friends. I will forever support the installed new presidents and support them to deliver whatever they have promised to deliver.

“ As the parliament of Uganda, we shall support you in all the projects you want to do. We shall contribute towards the success of Kololo rotary club and this is in fulfillment of the four way test which emphasizes the project should eventual benefit those that are concerned most especially the community members. We want to give back to the community or the people we live with or those that vote for us as leaders .

“As the speaker of parliament I will always support your rotary clubs. However, I need a week to learn about rotary and maybe after that I can make a better contribution towards rotary projects. Where you feel you need assistance we shall always be available for you and just know we don’t work in a vacuum. Maintain the spirit of together because I know rotary clubs bring people together. I thank you for the heart of giving back to the community.

‘Being a Liverpool fan we will never let you move alone. We supported Nsambya rotary cancer institute and whenever they need support from us they just call us because we it do for humanity.  Today it’s someone else, tomorrow it will be you, your father or mother etcetera. We are entitled to donation funds and that donation should go to you or the rest of the people.

“When I hear people saying Anita has been sanctioned over corruption that is untrue. I’m not corrupt, I am a rich woman for your information. I’m rich in the heart because I can give the little I have to anybody. If I find anybody on the way I give a coin to that person. I’m one of the investors in Bukedea district and most of the children in my schools are studying for free because I believe no girl or lady should ever go through what I went through to be where Iam. I want them to get better education and that is what Iam trying to do, “Speaker Among expressed concern on the plight of girl-child.

“People should stop covering what the truth is. The truth is that homosexuality is there and as Africans we have our values, culture and traditional beliefs that we believe in and that is why see these sanctions being imposed on us. I’m a village girl from Bukedea district and I’m ready to stay in my village and Uganda and so as long as Uganda doesn’t say I go away , I will stay in it and Bukedea,” Speaker Among vowed.

The Magic President- elect of Rotary club of Kololo, William Kaguma, who is now 37th president of the rotary club of Kololo thanked the past presidents and promised to move the club to greater heights and make it a top notch club in Kampala city. He however, revealed that in his first 100 days in office he will focus on rehabilitating some health centers in addition to spearheading tree planting campaigns.

“We shall give a facelift to Naguru Rehabilitation center –a facility for children who are abandoned. We shall over 20,000 trees in Ntungamo district and this will take place in November this year. Another project is in Busia district where we intend to improve and equip Lumino maternity Health 11 with modern equipment and the project would cost 83, 918 USD,  “Mr. Kaguma revealed.

The outgoing President of Rotary Club of Kololo, Alex Muhweezi,  disclosed that during his tenure in office, he was able to support children with life saving jackets to enable them cross Lake Bunyoni for daily studies on top of supporting Children rehabilitation center in Naguru. But he castigated the ministry of health for failure to give direct support to health 11s yet they have a lot of gaps to address.

“We have a challenge with the Ministry of Health in that it doesn’t extend support directly to health center 11s yet that’s where we are finding gaps. However, we have collaborated with the ministry very well via policy and at individual level.

“We have also supported the Rotaract club of Kololo to work with the volunteers in Canada to support children in Namuwongo suburbs to increase literacy of children in Namuwongo slums.’

The president elect of the Rotaract Club of Kololo, Christine Nangobi pledged to support the completion of a modern kitchen at Naguru Katale primary school and also build a community toilet in Kamwokya suburbs to enhance community sanitation and hygiene.

Mrs. Racheal Kiwumulo, the outgoing president of Rotaract club of Kololo, challenged her successor to expedite completion of the ongoing projects and to do better to keep the club flying.

The president elect of Rotary club of Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi, Mr. Amos Ogwal pledged to ensure that the rotary club benefits all community members.

“We are passionate about helping people who are in need in our community. Through our rotary activities we shall be able to touch a number of lives in the community, “ Nkozi University President elect Ogwal pledged.
