Following a footage released by police recently showing how a woman slid and fell in a drain during a rainy day, Kampala Capital City Authority has clarified the incident.
The incident happened May 2, 2020 at Nakawa.
However, according to KCCA, the victim fell in a drain, not a manhole.
“The victim fell in a roadside drain (during the rains) and NOT in an open Manhole. This drain forms part of a system (constructed in 2001) that drains both New Portbell Road and Jinja Road and Nakawa traffic junction,” KCCA spokesman, Peter Kaujju said, adding, “The drain is well lined and is about 1.5m wide by 1m deep. There is a 1-2m walkway besides the drain for use by the pedestrians.”
According to Kaujju, referring to the footage, it appears that the victim’s body was carried through a 600mm diameter cross culvert located at the junction of the two drains (for Jinja road and New Port Bell road).
Kaujju, however, did not commit to saying anything in line with the future.
