The electoral commission of the NRM has concealed the election results for Kapchorwa district over allegations of bribery and failure to grant declaration forms to agents for the candidates among other flaws that marred the exercise and ordered fresh elections that must be conducted before 10th August 2025.
The development was arrived at yesterday during a joint meeting between the commission and the aspirant’s candidates at Kyadondo in Kampala who had lodged in their petition challenging the entire exercise.
All the nine aspirants including five for woman member of parliament [WMP] and four for both constituency and municipality respectively jointly blamed their district registrar Akram Chemonges for failing to declare results on time as well as implicated in alleged bribery scams.
The commission chaired by its boss Dr.Tanga Odoi and his deputy Fred Jachan Omach having listened in from all the candidates unanimously agreed to conceal the entire election and order a fresh one to be conducted before 10th August 2025.
The candidates lamented that the registrar declined giving their agents declaration forms which is contrary to the NRM EC guidelines as well as failing to display the results at the tally centre on a projector but chose to read them from a small paper.
He apologized for the mess orchestrated by his team and immediately fired the district registrar Akram Chemonges replacing him with Isaac Chepkurui saying they will send a team from headquarters to oversee the fresh exercise soon.
Odoi urged the police to conduct investigations on the implicated officials including bribery allegations by the incumbents and ensure that they are brought to book.
The candidates narrated that they made a chase and arrested Akram with a black bag full of cash to the tune of 68m which they were reportedly sharing at one of the residency however Tanga said they sent 96m for the logistics of the team EC.
The woman MP candidates included Juliet Beulah Chepayeyin, Chemtai Susan,Jalia Seiko Chekosire Betty Kaali and Chemtai Philis the incumbent who was not present.
The Tingey county aspirants included Chelangat Nancy, Seyokwo Kenneth Obama and incumbent Fadil Twala while Kapchorwa municipality included Martin Chemonges and Chemowo Marshood Musa.
The candidates thanked the EC commission for prevailing over the matter saying they appreciate the efforts and justice has been served for the better.
