Residents retrieved two bodies on Thursday following heavy rainfall that triggered flooding after Sisi Water falls burst at Biritinyi Rocks in Lusha Sub County, Elgon County, Bulambuli District.
The floods, which struck on Wednesday evening, blocked the road connecting Simu to the upper sub-counties of Gombe and Bulago.
Several motorcycles were swept away and reportedly missing by press time as more victims are feared dead while the search and recovery operation continues.
The two bodies are of local boda boda riders from Gombe Sub County and were set to be buried on Friday, August 22, 2025.
The newly elected NRM parliamentary flag bearer for Elgon County in Bulambuli District, Moses Massa, visited the scene and joined residents and bereaved families in mourning their loved ones.
Massa contributed Shs300,000 to each family and Shs100,000 to the mother of Ronald, one of the deceased, as part of his condolences and support towards burial expenses. He also pledged to educate the late Ronald’s child.
He urged the government to upgrade the road, which was last constructed in 1958, noting that it urgently needs rehabilitation to ease the transportation of goods to markets in the lower parts of the district.
Simon Peter Wanonzofu, the Bulambuli District LC5 Chairperson and NRM flag bearer, told this publication that the effort is a collective one involving CDOs, sub-county chiefs, and LC3 chairpersons, who should begin compiling reports on missing persons from their homes before the search for more victims continues.
“There are only two bodies recovered so far, but since that day was a market day, we suspect that many more people could have been affected by this disaster,” Wanonzofu said.
Agnes, the District Councillor representing Lusha Sub-county, expressed her gratitude to Hon. Massa for supporting the community members and requested him to work on an alternative route to ease access for boda boda riders and pedestrians to both sides of the district.
She noted that if the youth are not engaged in productive work, they might resort to stealing people’s property.
