UCC Boss Urges Ugandans to Embrace Digital Technology

The Executive Director Uganda Communications Commission , Hon. George William Nyombi Thembo, has challenged Ugandans to embrace digital technology arguing that it’s the backbone of national development. He made the appeal on December 11,2025, while addressing digital and content creators during the climax of the inaugural Stanbic Ongea Digital Creators Summit. The summit brought together regulators, creators , and industry leaders .

Hon. George William Nyombi Thembo, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to supporting creators and strengthening Uganda’s digital infrastructures.

” Government has put digital transformation at the center of the socio-economic agenda. Our National Development 2025-2030 identifies digital transformation as an engine for development, enhanced service delivery and global competitiveness, ” Hon. Thembo noted.

‘ The commission tries to ensure connectivity reaches everywhere.Our internet costs are lower compared to those in the neighboring region. Smart phones grew from 19 -40 million .

‘ We demand digital creators to earn a living, not creators for hire to abuse others. As UCC we will continue to partner with Stanbic Bank to ensure our functional creators are supported to make their creation work sustainable business, “Hon. Nyombi Thembo pledged to support digital creators.

The Chief Executive Officer ( CEO) Stanbic Bank, Kenneth Mumba Kalifungwa, challenged Ugandans to treat creativity as a serious economic sector. He announced the Stanbic Ongea Digital Creators Summit to be an annual event.

“The internet is creating jobs faster than traditional industries.There are various platforms like TikTok, you tube, Instagram among others. Despite all these in place , creators in Uganda still face obstacles such as high internet costs and their regulations are limited compared to creators in the world, ” Mumba explained.

” Young innovators deserve an enabling environment that enables them to grow their business. ‘

The President of Uganda Digital society (UDS) John Ssenkeezi revealed that Uganda’s mobile ecosystem represents a huge opportunity for content creators citing 5.6 million basic phones, 31.5million feature phones and 19 million smart phones. He  however, says creators face monetisation challenges, intellectual gaps and high data costs. He, however, advised creators to choose platforms based on cost and efficiency.

The Executive Director National Information Technology Authority (NITA),  Dr. Hatwib Mugasa, said that there are ongoing efforts by the authority to expand broadband internet access so that Uganda has a stable internet connectivity.
