Ugandan Environmental Innovator Henry Lutwama Wins Prestigious Climate Award

The Award

Renowned Ugandan environmental innovator Lutwama Henry has been awarded the esteemed Climate Innovation Champion Award by Heal The Planet Organization.

The award, presented by celebrated US-based philanthropist and televangelist Dr. Michelle Corral, recognizes Lutwama’s groundbreaking work in harnessing biogas technology from chicken waste for community use. The project, supported by the IEEE Humanitarian Technologies Board, was pioneered in Matugga, Nansana Municipality.

“We focused on creating a low-cost biogas system from chicken waste,” explained Lutwama. “This innovative initiative provided affordable clean energy solutions for local communities, significantly reducing reliance on firewood and unsustainable energy sources.”

Lutwama’s pilot project has sparked widespread replication across the nation, with local leaders and residents hailing it as a game-changer.

“I am deeply honored to receive this award from Heal The Planet Global Organization,” said Lutwama in his acceptance speech. “I extend my sincerest thanks to Dr. Michelle Corral for presenting me with this award and to the IEEE Humanitarian Technologies Board for supporting this initiative.”

Mr. Kivumbi Earnest Benjamin, Executive Director of Heal The Planet, praised Lutwama for his dedication to improving lives across Uganda.

“This award recognizes outstanding individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and innovation in addressing environmental challenges,” said Benjamin. “Lutwama has indeed set the bar high for African conservation innovators. His practical approaches have inspired a whole generation of environmental innovators across the continent.”

Lutwama hopes to expand the project across Africa, creating a cleaner, greener continent for future generations.

“This is just the beginning,” he affirmed. “We will continue to innovate, replicate, and scale this project, driving transformative change across the continent. Before this project, many of our people had heavily relied on firewood for cooking. This was unhealthy and even expensive. As more and more people adopt cleaner energy alternatives, it’s proof that our efforts have started paying off. Africa is surely getting cleaner and greener every day. Every stakeholder must, therefore, ensure they leave behind a better world than the one they found. This is the safest and most sustainable way to go.”

The Climate Innovation Champion Award is a prestigious recognition of outstanding contributions to environmental sustainability and climate action.

“Lutwama’s success is proof that when communities are empowered with the right tools and knowledge, they can drive transformative change.” Kivumbi Earnest noted.
