UWA Senior Management Charts Results-Based Path at Retreat

Senior managers of Uganda Wildlife Authority are meeting in Entebbe to reflect, strategize, and set priorities for the next financial year. The two-day retreat, taking place at Protea Hotel, is centered on doing things better and getting better results.

Opening the meeting, Acting Executive Director Mr. Chemonges Sabilla challenged the leadership team to rethink the way UWA operates, emphasizing that delivering on the Authority’s mandate will require bold shifts in mindset, discipline in resource use, and zero tolerance for revenue leakages.

Mr. Sabilla called for a culture shift across the institution, doing things differently to achieve different and better outcomes. He emphasized the need for frugality with resources, fighting revenue leakages, and being more intentional in delivering on UWA’s conservation mandate. “If we want different results, we must do things differently,” he said. “We must be deliberate, frugal, and fully committed to getting value from every shilling entrusted to us.”

He emphasized the need to focus on the impact of the work that UWA does, saying it is not enough to just report activities. “We must ask ourselves what difference are we making?” he said. “Our mandate requires us to be deliberate about how we use resources, how we report results, and ultimately, how we deliver lasting impact for conservation and communities”, he added.

The retreat also serves as a platform to review departmental plans, align budgets to strategic priorities, and enhance accountability systems. It is part of a broader push to ensure that every action taken by UWA contributes meaningfully to protecting Uganda’s wildlife heritage and improving lives around protected areas.
