UCC suspends sim card registration over fraud

By Francis Otucu

Uganda Communications Commission has suspended registration of sim cards, this news site has learnt.

This, sources say is as a result on an investigatory story ‘Scam rocks sim card registration’ published in the Daily Monitor Monday.

UCC Executive Director, Eng. Godfrey Mutabazi confirmed the suspension in a statement Monday evening.

“The Commission has as a result directed all Telecom Operators to suspend the use of refugee cards and attestation letters from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) effective 7th October 2019,” part of Eng. Mutabazi’s letter reads.

He said the commission is formulating stringent procedures with the OPM on the validation of the refugee cards and attestation letters to mitigate further fraud.

“Until formally communicated by this Commission, no further registration will be permitted with the above mentioned documents. Any Telecom Operator identified to carry out registration from the date of this notice may be penalized accordingly,” Eng. Mutabazi warned.
