At 1:30pm, Saturday, over 30 inmates escaped Arua Government Prison. This, after they climbed a perimeter wall separating them and the ‘free’ world.
However, in an attempt to contain the situation, four were shot dead in a joint hunt by the Uganda Prisons staff, the police and the army.
The dead include; Richard Aguta, 37 (Lugbara, Resident of Aroi sub-county in Arua district, a convict in defilement case) and Gasper Okello (charged with being in possession of house breaking implements).
Two others remain unidentified. 5 of the escapees were arrested and are currently undergoing interrogation while 30 prisons uniforms have been retrieved.
Sources say no gun was taken during the incident while there wasn’t any injuries or deaths of UPS staff or any from the sister security agencies.
