Bishop castigates moral decay in Uganda

The retired Bishop of North Kigezi Edward Muhiima has said that Ugandans have lowered the moral standards of the nation through acts of immorality like dishonesty and lack of commitment to work.

Dr. Muhiima made the revelation Sunday while presiding over a confirmation service at St. Francis Chapel, Makerere. “We have lowered the standards of this country. The lowering of the standards is not only in only on the streets but also in our homes and place of work,” he said.

The Man of God cited an example of a skimpily dressed girl he met on the streets, who fled after seeing his clergy collar. “I stopped and lowered my window. As soon as she saw my collar, she run off. If she bent, you would see her knickers. But she was amidst men who did not make a comment,” the Bishop lamented.

He also castigated the elite who behave irresponsibly, giving an example of a driver who threw an empty water bottle and, maize and banana peels out of a sleek Mercedes Benz on to the road.

“You would expect an educated person in this Benz. Educated but morals zero,” he lamented.

He therefore asked his audience to be like ‘salt’ as described biblically.

“One of the characteristics of a salt is purity. Many people have turned away from God. When Jesus calls you salt, you must be pure and a preservative of the society where you live. You are the salt of Uganda. If we don’t bring God into the equation of our leadership, Uganda is impossible to change,” Dr. Muhima, who based his teachings on Mathew 5: 13, 14, said, and urged Ugandans turn to God.

He added: “You are like salt for the whole human race. But if salt loses its saltiness, there is no way to make it salty again. It has become worthless, so it is thrown out and people trample on it. You are like the light for the whole world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden.”
