By Abraham Lincolns | Jinja The Obwa’Kyabazinga of Busoga have dedicated all the days to burial date of the Tooro fallen King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV raising flags at the Kingdom at halfmast as a sign of griefing together with the people of Bunyoro-Kitara lineages. The statement was issued by the Kingdom’s premier Dr. Joseph Muvawala Nsekere on directives of the Kyabazinga of Busoga HRH Gabula Nadiope Kadhumbula IV. “I was directed by the Kyabazinga of Busoga H.R.H Gabula Nadiope Kadhumbula IV to raise our flags at halfmast for the days we shall mourn a young and vibrant cultural leader and a brother to our King, the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV”, Muvawala told the press. The Tooro Kingdom and the Busoga Kingdom share deep historical and ancestral ties rooted in the expansive Babiito (or Baise Ngobi) dynasty that originated from the greater Bunyoro-Kitara empire. On the other hand of Institutional relations of the Uganda Kings Council, during the 20th century, the traditional ruler of Tooro (the Omukama) and the head of Busoga (the Kyabazinga) sat together alongside other monarchs on consultative bodies like the Uganda Kings Council to coordinate matters relating to traditional leadership and cultural norms. By the time King Oyo succumbed to brain cancer, the two institutions remain diplomatic and ceremonial rather than political, focusing on joint efforts by cultural leaders to safeguard indigenous heritage across Uganda. “These shared roots manifest as general historical kinship rather than a functional role in succession rites”, Dr Muvawala added. Traditional Kingdoms in Uganda (including Tooro, Buganda, and Bunyoro-Kitara) frequently attend each other’s milestone ceremonies as honored guests to show mutual solidarity and preserve national cultural heritage. The Tooro Kingdom evolved out of a breakaway segment of Bunyoro sometime before the nineteenth century. It was founded in 1830 when Omukama Kaboyo Olim in 1918 while the title of Isebantu Kyabazinga was created and Wako Ezekiel took the throne in 1925 who later became the chairperson of the Uganda Kings Council. Both monarchies shared a parallel modern political trajectory—they were both abolished by Milton Obote’s central government in 1967 and jointly reinstated under the 1993 Ugandan constitutional provisions recognizing cultural institutions. On his X handle, the Kyabazinga expressed that he has lost a young brother who shared the same ambitions in lifting the cultural flags high. “I have lost a young brother whom we shared a lot in common in regards to lifting the cultural flags high”, Kyabazinga wrote. The lowered flags stand as a solemn symbol of respect, grief and honour for a beloved King who reigned for nearly 31 years, serving as an enduring symbol of unity, culture and tradition.
