The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has sacked two top UPDF officers   from the Ministry of Internal Affairs following several warnings to immigration officers who declined to issue out national identity card documents to Uganda- Banyarwanda community members.

The purge at the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC) saw Maj. Gen. Apollo Kasiita Gowa (Chief Citizenship and Immigration Control) and Brig. Gen. Johnson Namanya Abaho reverted to the Mbuya military headquarters effective this week.

In an internal memo shared with staff, over the weekend, the two embattled UPDF bosses confirmed their departure from the immigration offices.

“Be informed that myself (Gowa), and Brig. Johnson Namanya Abaho’s tour of duty in the Ministry of Internal Affairs has come to an end, and we shall be returning to Defence headquarters for other assignments. I thank you all for the opportunity to have worked with you,” the memo reads.

Recently, Gen Muhoozi through his X account issued a stern warning that he would axe all immigration officers who were making life difficult for Ugandans of Rwandese origins to get documents.

“I have decided to remove ALL the officers in immigration that were making life hard for our Ugandan – Banyarwanda to get IDs immediately. Others will be appointed soon” Muhoozi said.

He further noted that the same immigration officers had declined to give his grandmother a national ID.

“Some of those immigration officers denied my grandmother, Kaka Bella, an ID. Can you believe it? They are going to jail!!” Muhoozi warned.

Apparently, the immigration office is expected to undergo a significant restructuring as the government attempts to reconcile strict border controls with constitutional citizenship guarantees.
