Defunct Trade Chamber Implicated in NRM Rubaga Election Irregularities

A cloud of controversy continues to hang over the NRM Entrepreneur League elections in Rubaga Division following serious allegations that a deregistered business entity played a central role in the electoral process—and that members affiliated with it resorted to violence when the polls were halted.

In a formal petition addressed to Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairman of the NRM Electoral Commission, aspiring league chairman Kaggwa Deo revealed that the Uganda National Chamber of Trade and Investment—an organization officially struck off the national company register—was used to compile and support the voter register used in the election.

“This entity no longer holds any legal standing and should not be involved in any official process, especially elections,” Kaggwa stated. Documentation confirming the chamber’s deregistration was attached to the petition.

The petition further alleges non-compliance with the official NRM register, noting that several individuals listed to vote did not appear in the party’s verified database. Moreover, identity mismatches were observed between some voters and the names on the roll, casting further doubt on the legitimacy of the process.

Tensions escalated when the election officer, citing the irregularities, made the decision to cancel the election. According to multiple eyewitness accounts, members affiliated with the defunct chamber, led by one Nyaika Abdunasir Winyi, allegedly associated with Major Emma’s “ghetto outfit,” reacted violently.

The group reportedly attacked the election officer in an attempt to intimidate him into reversing the decision. However, Mr. Bwengye Francis, the presiding officer, is said to have stood his ground, refusing to compromise on the integrity of the process despite the threats.

The petition has also been forwarded to the NRM District Registrar for Lubaga District, with calls for immediate intervention from party leadership.

This incident not only highlights deep flaws in the local electoral process but also raises broader concerns about the infiltration of unauthorized groups into party activities and the rising threat of political intimidation.

As investigations unfold, the party faces mounting pressure to restore public trust and ensure that future elections are conducted transparently, fairly, and in accordance with both party and national laws.
