Businessman, Hassan Alwi and his family last evening went out to monitor family businesses along the shores of Lake Victoria.
About 3pm, Alwi, wife Shakira Super, daughter Alwi Amirror and son Jafalu Alwi were at Lulu fishing farm on the banks of river Nile (Buikwe side).
However, they then decided to go to the water. This was around 4pm. They visited the farm, then went to Samuka Island and then back.
This is when they decided to go and visit the old Nile Bridge. According to police’s preliminary report, at the time, the speed of water was so high since turbines were on and the engine power could no longer navigate the boat back.
It is then that the boat they were in started struggling. It (Boat) went down, part of the report reads.
Another boat with his other worker, Patrick Okidi, came on rescue mission but failed after it experienced an engine failure. The said boat also capsized in the process. It is then (5:30pm) that security manager, Escom phoned Nalufenya Police reporting drowning of people at Kiira dam Vide SD REF 09/30/08/2020.
The OC Station-led team together with the police marine responded slightly on time. However, Only Alwi, son Jafalu and Okidi were rescued by the team. By this time, Alwi’s wife and daughter had died.
The police say the bodies are at Jinja Hospital mortuary while the survivors are at Nile International Hospital, Jinja for treatment.
