The Independent Electoral Commission has lifted suspension of accreditation for the Citizens’ Coalition for Electoral Democracy in Uganda (CCEDU) for electoral related activities.
Details containing the lifting of suspension is contained in a letter dated February 21, 2019.
“Accordingly, in a meeting held today, Thursday, 21st February 2019, at the Electoral Commission Headquarters, between the Commission and CCEDU officials, the Commission has taken a decision to lift the suspension of accreditation of CCEDU for electoral related activities,’ the letter signed by the Commission boss, Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama reads in part.
The lifting of the CCEDU suspension comes following a July 4, 2018 joint team formed to review and harmonize EC/CCEDU working relationship.
The committee was also tasked to identify issues of concern from both EC and CCEDU while going about electoral activities.
Subsequently, a report was compiled, presented to the EC and adopted.
“The report includes mutually binding recommendations, which both the Commission and CCEDU have committed to,” the letter adds.
Sought for comment on what the lifting of suspension means, CCEDU Coordinator Crispin Kaheru could only say: “We are back in full gear.”
