The Commissioner for climate change from the Ministry of Water and Environment Margaret Athieni has applauded the women in business forums to start participating in programs of climate change, planning and implementation strategies at all levels because they are the major users of the environment-based resources.
She made remarks while officiating at the opening ceremony of the 4th Annual Women in Climate change conference under the theme; Women Leading Climate Action, from local solutions to Global policy and innovation at Makerere University Business School [MUBS] which was attended by over 800 women entrepreneurs drawn from across the country.
She advised the public to embrace clean cooking technologies to reduce the cutting of trees and preserve the environment.
She added that many people have destroyed trees leading to the disruption of the weather pattern.
At the same function the head of cooperation at the Germany embassy in Uganda Philippe Roussel has commended the Uganda government for creating an enabling environment where more women have embraced entrepreneurship opportunities which development has empowered them to overcome the burden of poverty.
Roussels noted that Germany and the Global green growth institute [GGGI] which is an intergovernmental body fronting for climate change mitigation legislation and policies shall continue to extend both financial and technical support to such organized and focused women farmer groups and entrepreneurs through training and enabling them access markets for their products.
The Principal of Makerere University Business School, Prof, and Moses Muhwezi as chief host of the two-day conference emphasized the need for curriculum review at Tertiary Institutions to include Climate change component for the good of all stakeholders
The Parliamentary shadow minister of Water and Environment, Christine Nakimwero says Climate change affects all Ugandans equally and calls upon the public to stop lamenting all the time and stand up firmly to protect the environment by planting trees and stop encroaching on the wetlands. Eng. Dr. Pablo Martinez from Greater Green Wall Initiative – SAfrican Union, says, through their Mentorship program, they have empowered women in different parts of the country to become leaders of Climate Change because they are powerful agents of change in the society
