Govt Committed to Foster Social Protection, Gender Minister Amongi

The Government of Uganda acknowledges the importance of social protection as a strategy for inclusive growth and social cohesion, Gender, Labour and Social Development minister, Betty Amongi has said.

Opening the media sensitization workshop on social protection at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala on 19th June, minister Amongi says the commitment is reflected in the key policy documents, including Uganda’s Vision 2040, the NRM Manifesto 2021-26, and the draft National Development Plan.

She says through the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development (MGLSD), they have been steadfast in their efforts to establish a robust social protection system.

She added that in 2010, the Cabinet approved the pilot Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE) under the Expanding Social Protection (ESP) programmes with its Senior Citizens Grant (SCG), currently benefits over 304,000 older persons, providing a vital safety net for our elderly population.

“Additionally, initiatives like the Special Grant for Older Persons (SEGOP) and the National Special Grant for Persons with Disabilities (NSG) have reached thousands more, improving livelihoods and fostering resilience,” she noted.

She added that despite the positive impacts of these programmes, there remains a significant gap in public understanding and awareness of social protection.

“This workshop aims to equip you with a comprehensive understanding of our social protection initiatives so that you can accurately and effectively communicate these efforts to the public,” she says.

“As editors, journalists, bloggers, and social media influencers, you have the power to shape narratives and influence perceptions,” she added.

She added: By enhancing your understanding of social protection, we hope to foster a media environment that supports and advocates for the vulnerable populations in our society.

She urged the media to actively participate and ensure that the message of social protection reaches every corner of Uganda.
