Gov’t worried of child headed families in Amuru district

By Our Reporter

Government is worried with the number of female child headed families in Amuru District.

The state minister for gender and culture, Peace Regis Mutuzo, says out of the 317,000 households in Amuru district 81,000 are headed by female children, due to early marriages.

Mutuzo now calls development partners to consult government as they out projects in various parts of the country so that there advised on the most challenging areas.

A report in 2008 said acute poverty was forcing girls as young as 14 into early marriage and sex work in parts of northern Uganda affected by the war.

A combination of extreme poverty, a large number of child-headed households, and the high mobility of internally displaced families were among the factors that led to girls being subjected to sexual abuse or engaging in sex work, according to the Gulu Support the Children Organisation and the Acholi Community Empowerment Network
