Hajji Kigongo Faces ‘Political Coup’ Plot

 By Our Reporter

NRM national vice chairman Al-Hajji Moses Kigongo is reported to be under political siege courtesy of one of the presidential aides.

Kigongo recently attracted wild cheers from mourners in Butambala during the burial of Hajji Medi Kagwa [former chairperson Ugandan Human Rights Commission] after he said that it was good for leaders to retire when they are still ‘energetic and loved’. His statement has since attracted the attention of opponents who think he wants to quit politics as NRM national vice chairman.

Sources in state house told this Magazine that among the contestants is Keefa Mafumo who works as the presidential assistant on youth affairs since 2012 to date. Keefa, a former NRM youth chairperson for Manafwa before joining state house is remembered for having seconded a motion in 2014 NRM delegates conference which sealed Amama Mbabazi’s fate and also made the positions of NRM SG, deputy, treasurer and her deputy a full time job at the secretariat in addition to being appointive.

“We are wondering; is Hajji Kigongo going to retire? Could this be the reason he is not actively involved in ongoing mobilization? By virtue of his office, he is taken as the Inspector General of the ruling party but he is nowhere” sources revealed, adding that this has not happened and yet people are disgruntled on the ground.

Sources told us that already Keefa has begun secret mobilization in his coup plot against Kigongo. For example, he met veterans in Kiboga, Luweero and Nakaseke who explained their ordeal to him. He also discovered that much of the ongoing disgruntlement by youths against NRM is not caused by joblessness but because the party top brass neglected veterans most of whom have started losing memory due to old age.

“If these veterans fought alongside our elders in the party and have started losing memory due to old age, this therefore calls for youth intervention. Most of these elders have worked and we appreciate their contribution but it seems most of them are tired. We want to enter strategic positions so that we understand the inner strategies so that when they finally go, there is going to be continuity of the party” a source involved in anti-Kigongo coup plot revealed.

We are told Keefa is concerned that because the current leadership of the party is not helping president, this is why the youth are coming out to position themselves so that they can help him.

“Museveni is currently the in-charge cabinet, intelligence, security and he is also the chairman of the party. He has also now become a musician. This is too much work for him. He needs energetic people to help him. This is why we must begin with key positions” sources added. Besides Keefa, we understood that there are also other youth in service who want seats for big shots. For example Godfrey Longa also wants the deputy leader of government business Gen. Moses Ali retire peacefully from parliament while Odrek Rwabwogo is also still glued on the position of NRM vice chairman-Western region currently under Maj. Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza while Godfrey Kiwanda who is struggling to retain his constituency is now considering dislodging Hajji Abdu Nadduli as vice chairman-Buganda region.
