Murders arising from domestic violence pose a big challenge, the police has said.
Speaking to journalists on Monday morning in Kampala, Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said the cases of domestic violence murders rose between January 14 and January 20, 2019. “Domestic related homicides are the biggest threat, and yet such murders come with warning signs of violence, threats and coercion against the victims,” Enanga said.
He added: “We have tasked our Child and Family Protection officers and the police at large to take interest on domestic violence situation especially where they receive repeated calls for assistance on domestic violence; and evaluate the danger levels especially on couples or families at the stage of separating and those driven/influenced by alcohol, jealousy, threats or stalking behavior.”
Although Enanga did not reveal the exact number of those killed in the past week, one such case was recorded on Sunday in Ntarama Village, Soko Parish in Muramba Sub-County, Kisoro district where a 26 year old man, Buni Opendo, followed his wife Gloria Byiringiro to her parental home in Rushenyi and hacked her several times with a panga.
Opendo is currently detained at the Central Police Station in Kisoro.
Meanwhile, Enanga offered a toll free line, 0800199699 and 0800122291 or emergency lines 199 or 122, for the public to report such crimes to police.
